OSS #141: Happy Ending

I was looking for a poem that can go along this comic strip because I wanted to give my thoughts a rest. I can get too preachy at times when all I want is for people to think for themselves. I like how poems make people think, or at least try. I decided to post (without permission so I hope those concerned won't sue me) a poem by Carol Ann Duffy. Her poetry book entitled Rapture (available in Powerbooks) was recommended to me by my partner and I'd like to recommend it to those who are into poems about love in different forms and stages. Here is a sample of her work:

Grief

Grief, your gift, unwrapped,
my empty hands made heavy,
holding when they held you
like an ache; unlooked for,
though my eyes stare inward now
at where you were, my star, my star;
and undeserved, the perfect choice
for one with everything, humbling
my heart; unwanted, too, my small voice
lost for words to thank you with; unusual,
how it, given, grows to fill a day, a night,
a week, a month, teaching its text,
love’s spinster twin, my head bowed,
learning, learning; understood.

- Carol Ann Duffy

I LOVE THIS POEM. Very introspective. Talagang nagdig ang author sa kung ano yung naiparamdam sa kanyang damdamin ng grief na ibinigay sa kanya. SHET. :)

i don't know what kind of ending is in store for me, but if it will be grief, i hope the cause of it would be love.

it will be all worth it...

@Theo Martin, the poem wasn't all that too sad for me. Seeing grief as a gift and an opportunity for learning is like a little triumph whatever caused the grief. Winner pa din.

@the geek, but you know love doesn't have to be soooo sad, right? It still is your choice to make it sad or not.

You have an amazing talent. Your strips are insightful. I'll be dropping by here from now on.

Thanks Tesha. :)

@ Niel - I didn't find it sad. I find it true. I find it honest. I find it wonderful. :) hehe.

Ahhh... akala ko kasi ramdam na ramdam mo ang grief. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem.

hey niel..apparently you think like my ex. but i beg to disagree..

but you know love doesn't have to be soooo sad, right? It still is your choice to make it sad or not.
- some circumstances are beyond our control. ano yun kapag di na katanggap tanggap na mga actions nya, tatanggapin mo pa din?takes two to tango.

so as for me, they lose me before i lose them! which eventually leads to extreme grief. it's hard to leave someone you still love..up til now.

some circumstances are beyond our control.

True. It is also true that we can control how we react to those circumstances. Like seeing a glass half-full. Like turning the other cheek or hitting back.

it's hard to leave someone you still love..up til now.

Your decision to continue to wallow in the past is what makes you sad. Loving someone is a decision. I don't like to rub it in but you chose to be sad.

i totally agree, being happy is always a decision.

btw, regular na ba si ninong dito? parang ang dami ko nang na-miss na karakter.

Thanks for agreeing [G]. For a while I was doubting it myself.

Hindi po regular si ninong dito. Guest lang sya. Second time pa lang nya lumabas. He guested first at the wedding reception issue which didn't look like a wedding reception.

point taken.no, i chose to be happy already.just recently. i was just being sentimental again.hehhe.the past defines who we are, but we musn't cling to it.

the love was so strong that i couldn't forget it. after a relationship ends, then you're not hurt, i think it somehow implies that you did not invest completely.

it's nice to inject humor on serious stuff like this. ninong shrek made my day. =)

i need volunteers to bring back my happy self.ligawan ko si puypuy.

Sometimes I choose to be happy. And sometimes I choose to be right. =)

but being right entails a lot, sometimes killing your happiness.
=(

that's what i did.

Glad to hear you decided to be happy, Anonymous. Pero bata pa si Puypuy. Bawal! :P

"after a relationship ends, then you're not hurt, i think it somehow implies that you did not invest completely."

Probably. Or some people just express being hurt in different ways. Some people try to escape. It's okay to feel sad but like I said, we don't have to be soooo sad. Some people just indulgently exaggerate their sadness. I'm not saying exaggeration is wrong. I'm saying there's an alternative.

@Mr Scheez, Nice! That sounds very poetic and I like it. But my curious side wants to ask questions. When you choose to be right, what do you mean? Isn't doing the "right" thing a way to please someone (God/family/friends/society)? And you're not happy pleasing this someone? If you're not happy, why do you please him/her/them?

Some people try to escape. - could be good, could be bad.

actually i had a much-delayed escape already, then the so called-ex told me...

" you're running away, trying to escape this."

haha.

so what is there for me to stay?

And you're not happy pleasing this someone? If you're not happy, why do you please him/her/them? - i am so foolish to do this as well. just a personal thought, but i guess we are so blinded by it, that's why we give in; and some people tend to abuse it...for the same stupid reason...

love.

May problema ako. Hindi ako tablan ng poem. Either nasa cynic phase ako ngayon, o talagang pinili ko huwag tamaan.

Happiness.. Sometimes, there are consideration you have to make. But you're right, we choose what makes us happy.
